Poker question?
« on: April 03, 2010, 05:35:40 PM »
Hello,

I play a lot of home games with my friends. i dont mean to sound conceided, but i am playing on a whole different level than some of them. Lately it seems like no matter how i play i lose with an amazing string of bad luck. I can play every hand perfect and everytime on the river i will get screwed. When this happens i generally go on tilt, and end up losing more and more even though i continue to play perfect. i will pre-flop raise with excellent hands just to get beat by someone who played something awful pre-flop. i could have AK suited and bet 5x the blind and will get called by something like 84 offsuit and end up losing to 2 pair or trips. and lately this has happened literally every hand i've played. I guess my question is how do i overcome such bad luck? i know sometimes poker is 90% skill and 10% luck and sometimes its 90% luck and 10% skill, but latly it seems like its 100% luck for everyone else. Any suggestions on how i can possibly turn this around would be great.

Hi Anthony,

Firstly - welcome to LCB.  Glad you found us.

There are a few things that come to mind having read your post.  One is - do they play online?  Do they watch TV poker shows?  Have they ever played before?

It sounds as though you are doing everything right.  What is your betting strategy post flop?  Turn and River?  If you think they are going to get lucky, you have to raise them off the hand i.e. get them to fold.  Make the bet uncallable if they are chasing.

More info re the above questions would help.

Hi Anthony,

You said a very interesting thing...."playing a whole different level than some of them". I do think that is part of the problem. It seems when i play poker at home with people that are not that familiar with the game they tend to stay in with bad hands.

It is the inexperienced players that can really throw your game off course. I can relate to you totally. I have played with friends who have little experience. I feel i have the edge and they end up winning.

Knowledgeable poker players know when to hold them and know when to fold them. I have said countless times to newbie players "how can you stay in with a hand like that after i raised".....their reply......"was 7 2 a bad hand"? The answer is ummmm yes it was!!!!

Your probably on a losing streak as well. Be patient it will pass and it happens to all of us. Play reserved and know your players. Maybe the only way to push out the bad hands is to raise harder preflop.

There has to be a weakness in these type of players that you can read.......find it. After all you really do have the edge....your good poker player.

Good luck, before you know it you'll be on top of your game again. Keep us upated on your progress.

Just sounds like your having a bad run, or your friends got so sick of losing to you they started cheating. Watch to see if the're dealing from the bottom of the deck.

Most likey they are just getting lucky, and i would stop worrying about it as it shouldn't be important who wins in friendly games anyway. I always feel bad taking money from friends who are just there to have fun and have no idea what they are doing.

My only tip is, if they call anything... don't try to pull of big bluffs as most rookies will just call you down with absolutely nothing anyway.
