Rebuys and Add-ons ???
« on: December 02, 2011, 01:58:15 AM »
I was playing in a Freeroll tournament at BetOnline tonight (came in 88th out of about 1500 - no money :( ). This tournament had unlimited $2,000 rebuys up to the first break and $5,000 add on allowed during the break. I took a rebuy and I did use the add-on at the break. But it felt kinda of weird to do this. 8'|

??? So, I am wondering how you guys feel about this? Do you use rebuys? add-ons? Do you like this feature in a tournament? What do you think about this in general?

I don't particularly like R & A tourneys because the players seem to play like idiots.  I do play them but when I do, I try and just get into the money with my original buyin.  I will rebuy a couple of times (cheap tourneys) if I'm knocked out and I will do the addon (if I consider it is worth it).  Overall, I don't like them much.

What about you Katt - apart from feeling kinda weird - what do you think of them?

I don't like them much. Folks play like fools going all-in when there are no rebuys or add-ons available. It is much worse with this option available. Can't get down to a real game until after the break when no more are available.

Plus you can't be sure of being rid of the all-in nut when you beat them, they rebuy and you have to wipe them out all over again. Just keep popping up like bad pennies.

For myself, like I said, it felt weird... it felt almost like cheating myself because I did not have to rely only on my skill or lack thereof... When I added at the break it did not seem right to suddenly have that extra $5000, like it was a misrepresentation of my gameplay to that point.

One thing I noticed, for the large number of entries in the tournament the actual number of rebuys and add-ons was less than 10% of those entries and I know some people rebought more than once... so I would judge that it is not something a lot of people like to do even when it is available.

Well, if its say $2 per rebuy then its worth playing some crazy hands, going all in etc, and try to double, triple or even quadruple up :D ( ofc not with crappy hands )

If you mange to do so then you would be way ahead, and then you can play your game.
If you lose then no harm done as you lost only $2 and you can start all over again.

I do rebuy often, especially if i lost at the start of the game. No point if rebuying 30-45min after the kick off, as then every1 else would already have built up their stacks, so it wouldnt do you much.

I don't like them much either LOL.If I make it to the break and I have a decent stack,I will rebuy then.I agree before that you get the all- iners ;) and they can drive me right out of the game.I've seen some rebuy more than they win...if they make it that far LOL ...sorry but I'm not going to spend more than I'd win if I'm lucky enough to place in the  $$

IMO rebuys should always be used at the early stage of the toruney. Regarding the addons they are a must do.

Well Zuga you give a whole different look to this subject. And I have to think about the fact that you do win real money when you play. Hmmm... I suppose I should not feel weird or a bit guilty when I use them...

The game I described was only one of a very few times I have played in a game with R & A's so my jury is still out. I am really appreciating the feedback on this.

Yeah I won quite a bit, but at the same time I lost quite a bit too LOL

Im pretty much even atm, but the fact is i simply dont have enough time to commit to poker and improve my game ( which surely can be significantly improved )

After all playing poker is a full time job if you want to end up ahead.

I did once join a Rebuy & Addon tourney half way through.  I paid my buck, no rebuys and I believe I did do the addon and ended up winning the tournament.  There were about 2,000 entrants.

I think it was one of the best games I ever played and I believe that was purely down to the fact that I was at such a disadvantage to the remaining players.

Zuga- you certainly have shed a different light on the R & A tourneys and the tactics to use to get a big bankroll in them.  Definitely one to think about.

I usually rebuy early in the tourney if I am knocked out.  But not too many times and never late right before the break.  I always take the add on.  It boosts your chip count and who can't use more chips?

The $600 tourney I won cost $1.10 with rebuys and add on.  I got knocked out and bought in again for $1.00 and then for another $1.00 took the add on.  So it cost me $3.10 for the win.  Probably won't ever happen again, but that was the scenario.

Medtrans and blueday both of you make it sound like a darn good idea in these last 2 posts! I played in another one today, but got knocked out way early and did not rebuy... got to get past that discomfort about it... of course it might help if my bankroll was more than $1.00 LOL

Ok, so, I went and played another R&A tournament. I was determined to rebuy and add-on with no cringing or twinges of guilt... intrepid ain't I?  :'$ 8)

So, I never get to zero before first break so no rebuys required. Break comes and I go take care of break business and get back to add-on and dang if I ain't too late to add-on... best laid plans, I tell ya...
 LOL LOL
But, I did come in 14th out of 1500 or so in the tourney... In the money! Now my bankroll is up to $1.75 !!  $$

Nice one Katt.  It's not huge but you made it in the money which is a fab result in itself.

I'm just wondering if you know about the rebuy where you don't lose all your chips?  Say the starting stack for everyone is 1500 chips and you get down to say 1460 chips - you are posting and folding - you know that you can rebuy at this point?  You can rebuy another set of chips which would give you 2960.  Once you fall below hte original starting stack, you are in a position to rebuy.

When I read Katts post,I was thinking the same thing blue.It sounds like she thought you had to have zero chips before you can rebuy.
