  • change of game plan since it was a buy-in with only 45 ppl,I'd probably fold and stay in the game.I should have payed more attention...just like when I'm playing,no wonder I lose more than I win!!LOL

  • I'd call...just cuz I like to live life on the wild side LOL LOL but seriously Id take in the fact that they are playing with rubbish...and winning :-pp and yep...call and hope for the best. ;D

LOL Rosebud.  Actually I did do your original gut instinct, I called.

    The player showed 9c.gif  9s.gif.

I hit another Queen on the flop and he lost and was out of the game.  I only called because of the poor play I had seen in previous hands (not from this player though).

He was absolutely furious swearing and cursing me.  I just said "you made a mistake".  I didn't want to rise too much to his bait.  He obviously closed the table after his bad language attack on me, as no further comments were made.

Needless to say, I didn't go on to win/place.  It was very late at night and I really just felt so tired and wanted to get to bed.  Can't remember what I called on - must have been a rubbish hand!

Thank you both for your replies.  Much appreciated.

  • Well played blu

  • yea i think i would have called too Blu , simply because it is a pair in hand only with two other pairs higher.. i'd think it was good chances at that tables's atmosphere.

  • btw i got my first elusive Royal Flush in a push to me at all in , over on the Merge network last week.. was a freeroll though and my stack was limping , so there wasn't much to it's win.

Shame you didn't take a screenshot of it, it would have been nice to see.

    Well done Tim.

I agree, it's not a bad hand but with the luck that had been going on previously (other players), I was concerned.

  • This is a 20c R & A tournament on AdamevePoker for a ticket to the next stage of the Paris WPT.  This really is a low value tournament with really poor players.

I've been watching one particular player who has been raising big with 5 7 off suit, 8 10, 7 9 etc.  I'm BB and I have  2c.gif  2h.gif.  I've been min raised by this fish and normally, with such a small pocket pair, I would fold.  I decided to call purely because of how this player had played his previous hands.

The flop comes down ks.gif  qh.gif  td.gif and the opponent bets min bet.

    What would you do here?

    blue

  • It's a good hand you got there but if it were me, I probably would fold due to the fact that other players might have hands with bigger suits.

  • It depends on my last few hands....

If I had a few strong hands that I took down (say 3 out of 6) where at least 1 went to showdown. I would go for the bluff since I would have a decent intimidation factor working for me. If 1/4 my stack > or = 2xpot. 2xpot is what I would bet.

Now if I was new at the table or my past few hands were call/fold. I may raise by 4xmin just hoping for fold. If not I would flat call and see what happens on the turn. Unless it's later in the tourny where blinds are big, I would not fold to a min bet.

  • i'd have to say i think i would fold .. and wait out another chance.. agreeing with Nan too much chance a donk has a single face card in his hand .

  • Because this player bet the minimum, I really thought he had nothing at all plus based on the hands that he had been raising on, I thought he would have 5 7 off or something like that.

When I did what I did I actually amazed myself because I just went all in.  There was no hesitation on his part and he just folded straight away.  I had read him right and won the pot.

I think it was a risky move but in the circumstances, the right move.

Thank you everyone for replying.  I do appreciate it.

    blue

  • Good call blue.I would have folded and then kicked my own butt...all the way home!!LOL

  • This was an old hand from a few years ago that I've never forgotten.  The reason I've never forgotten it is because it was televised!

Each Saturday on Sky Poker, they used to hold the Poker Open which was always shown on TV after the event.  One week I decided to buy into the tourney which was a £10 buy in.  They still run and televise this event.

The play was terrible and I'd been watching a particular player who bet so high, everyone kept folding to his bets and we never got to see his hands.  He was basically stealing everyones blinds.

The tournament is about half way through, I'm BB and I'm dealt 4d.gif  4h.gif.  I've been playing really tight but I'm in the top 33% of the remaining field.

The blind stealing person decides he wants to steal my blinds and bets 1200.  I think the blinds were about 200/400 at the time.

What would you do in this situation taking into account all the details above, the previous play and not seeing this guys hands plus the fact that this is also being televised!

    blue

  • How very cool blue!! Boy this one is a real tough one. I'd know what'd I'd with a higher pair but 4's.....and with one one playing steal the blind...chip bully (?) ...I'm gonna think on this one...sorry blue.

There's no rush Rosebud.  Take your time.

  • Blue, since you were in the top 33% and he's pretty much buying the pot since no one has really called him that much,I'd call the 1200 and hope  two 4's came up ;) LOL.I really don't like playing against ppl like that...what's the skill in playing that way.I played on a freeroll that the top 10 finish in the money...usually under a 100 players and one guy goes all-in every hand !! :/After about 15-20 hands I get AA and think I might as well try and of course i have him all the way to the river but he then gets a straight >:( :`o  sometimes I hate that darn river !! LOL Let us know what you did and if you beat the pants off him !! :-[ :-[ LOL

  • Rose - I think you've waited long enough and it doesn't look as though anybody else will reply.

I should add that not all hands were shown on the TV show as it would have lasted all day and all night.  But this hand was actually shown.

This is what happened.  I re-raised him because I felt that I was in front based on this players previous play.  He just flat called.

The flop was something along the lines of kc.gif  js.gif  2s.gif.  The turn was  6h.gif and the river 6c.gif.

Nothing on the board helped my hand and we both just checked it down to the river.  It was weird to see my hand on the show and the comments they made during the hand were "bold move by bluehaze there" "she can take this down if she bets now" and "I don't think bluehaze knows where she is in this hand".  He was so right.  I really wasn't sure where I was in the hand or whether I was winning or not.

I actually did win and I don't recall exactly the opponents hand but he certainly didn't have an ace or a picture.

  • That would really be weird to hear them commenting on your play!!I'm glad to hear that you won tho.

  • This is a cheap tourney on PokerStars (10c).

360 players start the multi table tournament and there are about 100 left.  I'm pretty low in the leaderboard and need to get me some chips.  Blinds are 100/200.

I'm dealt ad.gif  kd.gif and I'm in mid position.  One player flat calls as do I and BB checks.  The flop comes down ah.gif  qc.gif  7h.gif.

BB bets 200 and the other caller just flat calls.  I thought I would see if anybody really had anything and decided to raise to 600.  BB raises all in and the other player re-raises all in.

Would you call?  You will have a few hundred chips left if you do.  What would you do?

    blue

  • Well blue, I am just learning how to play poker online, but I'd like to try and answer this.

I would definitely call in this situation. Neither the BB or the other player were overly excited about their hole cards so I doubt either had anything as good as your A-K suited. So it seems BB is trying to buy the pot with his all-in and the other player responds in kind trying to do the same with his all-in raise. I don't see anything in the flop that would improve their hands enough to beat your Aces. So there you have it...

Can't wait to hear what you did and how it came out.

    katt

  • Blue, since it was a cheap tourney and you  are already in for 600 chips and you do have a pair of A's,I'd go all-in :) and hope for the best :-bd

  • Great replies Katt and Rosebud.

I did, of course, call.  I thought it was pretty safe bearing in mind nobody raised and the two players that were in the hand had played quite a few hands (limping in).

    BB revealed their hand.....qs.gif  5d.gif

The player that flat called reveals his hand....as.gif  ac.gif

The turn and river were hearts and nobody had a heart so they didn't make the flush and neither of these two cards helped anyone.

I was pretty gutted that the player slow played his aces.  Personally, I think it's a very dangerous move and I never slow play them.

    blue

  • Wow, bummer... never would have expected those 2 aces! Glad it was a very low-cost tourney or you would have been a whole lot more gutted!

Like I said I am newly learning so may I ask what it means to "slow play" the aces? Why is it dangerous? And how should it be done?

    thanks

    Good question Katt.

Basically, when you have pocket aces you should raise the bet by at least 6 x BB but I usually do 10 or more.  You don't want the fish getting lucky wiht their 2 3 off suit.

Sometimes (and quite often) you will get players who slow play their aces i.e. they don't raise the pot pre-flop.  They limp in by calling the amount of the Big Blind leading you (and everyone else) into a false sense of security.

I've seen a lot of players slow playing their aces and losing to rubbish hands.  An example would be BB has 9d.gif  2s.gif and you have  ad.gif  ac.gif.  You don\'t raise the BB and just you and BB are in the hand.  The flop comes down  2d.gif  9s.gif  td.gif.  You have pocket Aces still but the opponent has two pairs.  If no other cards arrive on the table that will assist your hand, you have lost.

It is a very dangerous play NOT to raise or "slow play" aces.  I would rather just take the blinds than lose to a rubbish hand like that.  Oh and if you get any callers on your big raise, your next move is all in.  Don't let anyone draw on a straight or a flush.

    I hope this helps.

EDIT:  Katt - check out this little corker from way back when - the power of the pre-flop raise

  • Thank you blue! That explains it perfectly to me... and now I know that I did slow play a pair of aces in my ignorance and I was just lucky to have won the hand anyway... whew!  woo Won't be doing that again that way! Thanks again for your patient and very clear answer!

  • This is not a poker "hand" per se, but it is a definite "what would you do?" Hope it is ok to put it here.

Anyway, I was playing in a $.25/$.02 SnG. Down to last 2 of 6 players and my opponent went all in on every hand no matter what he had. He had a little more in his bankroll than I did and as he did this my bankroll kept shrinking with the blinds, while I folded hand after hand that were lousy cards and he never stopped going all-in every time.

The end result was I played a high pair hand and he went all in and lucked into the winning hand, game over.

Have you encountered this kind of play head to head? What would you have done against this tactic?

    katt

  • I've played against those types and did the same as you and with the same results as you katt...does make me want to reach into the game and slap them LOL LOL

  • I know the type you are talking about Katt.  Bearing in mind you said you were heads up, any high card like J, Q, K or Ace with any other card, I would have been bullying back.  I've found that the RNG's will favour the heavy better in these situations and you just got to win one hand to break his run.

If you were getting rubbish, chances are that he was too and he was just bullying you.  It is typical that they get lucky with their rubbish but if you stand your ground early enough, you can turn it around.

Easy to say but hard to do.

    blue

  • Thanks Rosebud, I could have just stomped my feet and spit! Took all the fun out of the end of what had been a good game...

Blue you are absolutely right, I should have countered with the same right at the beginning, I had a very small advantage in bankroll size and he was getting crap like 3 9 off suit... and I think I had the edge mentally because I had been very steady and won the hands I played... lot of folding whenever I bet a hand... I just was not prepared for this tactic... but that is why I am playing these little games... to learn! I will be ready for that next time! Thanks again for great advice!

  • I meant to add that suited connectors and connected cards are pretty good too.  You did well to finish in the cash Katt.  Keep on keeping on.  You are definitely getting there.

  • Thanks blue for the vote of confidence... I actually did play some more SnG's and took 2nd in one and 1st in another... the 1st place was against a very experienced player who started out the playoff when we were the last 2 with 4x the bankroll I had... I persevered though and made it to the top!

  • Here is a hand for you to consider.  It's the first hand, nobody raises pre-flop.  It's a 6 seater cheapy tourney and you are the Dealer.

You are holding ac.gif  qh.gif.  One player raises and everyone (except one person) calls.  The flop comes down as.gif  ts.gif  7s.gif

Everyone checks.  The turn is 6c.gif  so I decided to do a "test" bet. I bet 150 (half the pot) and I get one caller.

The river is 6s.gif.  The other player is first to act and he bets 450.

You have top pair, great kicker..what would you do?

I'll tell you what I did soon.

    blue

  • Well blue, you came up with another toughy,it would have been easy but of course another spade came up so I'd probably fold and then hang my head in shame!! LOL

  • I find I play the players as much as the cards, but this being the first hand you would not know this player's style...

so I would have to look at the bidding... I would think he had a weak pair until that last spade came out and he filled the flush and bet the $450... that being my thought I would think I should fold.

But, I think what I would have done is call the $450 on the premise that he wants to buy the pot by raising the stakes... I find it hard not to bet on a pair of aces and even harder with a second pair behind it. Although, this thinking has lost me some pots counting on 2 pair to win... usually lose betting on 2 pair.

Can't wait for the rest of the story!

    katt

  • I would fold.  Since it is a "cheapy tourney" and no one raised preflop and everyone stayed, the $450 bidder probably had the flush or three 6's.  Some of the hands these people play are incredible.

    Anxious to hear what happened.

    medtrans

  • Thank you for your replies everyone.  Much appreciated.

I did as you all said you would do and that was to fold.  I folded because of the possible flush AND because as you said Katt, it was the first hand.  I had no idea about how this player played, what sort of hands he kept and so on.

I did get a view of his hands later on in the game and made a note on him (some of which I cannot repeat!)  :`o which read "called a pre-flop raise with 69 off suit and won".  This player was an absolute donkey.

I would love to hear your "what would you have done" hands.

    blue

  • Well if that is what a "donkey" does, today was donkey day whatever I played... Had people at every level and game doing just that... got very un-fun to play today. There is just no thinking and consideration of the game... and those same people are the ones that call people names in chat... go figure

This is the most frustrating part of poker today Katt.  There is no respect for the game any more.  They use the RNG to get their flush or straight cos they know it will hit.    You might see a better quality player with higher buyins - I use the word "might" very loosely though.

To get a really good game with proper poker play, try a double your money sitngo.  These are great.

Yup katt.  I hear you.  That's why I quit playing poker a while back.  Now that I am back at it nothing has changed.  I haven't won anything since I won the "biggie."

My problem is I get so frustrated with the way they play I find myself doing the same thing.  But I don't seem to win and they do.  :(

I am going to keep at it though because I am done playing slots for a while.

  • Try playing at True Poker.  I don't have an LPB link for you - www.truepoker.ag  They have a different RNG there and you may find you get a better game.  The donks don't win with their rubbish and skill is needed.  The only problem here is there aren't too many people on the site (probably because of their RNG!).

They also have 12 hours of freerolls every Friday:

    TIME ET PRIZE

    12:05 $50

    13:05 $50

    14:05 $50

    15:05 $75

    17:05 $50

    18:05 $100

    23:05 $50

    blue

  • I feel you medtrans... I don't get frustrated so much as disgusted... I keep sitting down at a table and one person with crap in their hand will go all-in pre-flop on the first hand out of the gate... that seems to set the tone for the game especially if they win the hand... if they get slammed out the door there is hope the table will settle down... I slammed one of them on that tactic the other day, but usually one other hotdog with nothing in their hand will go along with it and lose, then the donkey has twice as many chips as everyone else and can continue playing that way. Enough of that and I go all in on marginal cards just to lose and leave the table.

Oh and I also agree about the slots... they are so tight now and it gets so expensive to play for a few minutes... poker takes much longer and the losses are small, not to mention a freeroll somewhere all the time...

Blue, thanks for that suggestion... I was wondering where to play to get a decent game. Do they have that double your money sitngo you spoke of? If not, where can I find that? For now off I go to check out True Poker!

    katt

  • They do have them there Katt but the smallest is $10 that I could find.

    blue

  • Well I downloaded them and signed up... they seem to be the same as another place I play, I am thinking BetOnline??? When I picked my login, it said already used, when I picked my nickname for the tables, it said already used, but I have not used them or played at TruePoker before... hmmm... hope they don't consider it 2 accounts.

Anyway, I got into a tourney and it was going well with one strong player that bet a bit too often, but did not hammer with a large stack... our play seemed to be keeping the rest of the table pretty mellow too... but my internet kept getting disconnected which is rare for me... so, even with that I kept getting back in the game after resetting my router but it hurt my play and bankroll so I only came in at 6th place...

    Thanks blue!
