So, as gollum would ask... What does it gots in its pocketsssss...
I am playing in a tournament (on break at the moment) and find myself wondering about this pockets question...
What is it that one might have in the pocket that really needs an all-in bet? It is so misused now, but at some time there was a moment that going all in was just the right thing to do... usually at some showdown or critical spot in the game, not just casual "oh I guess I will go all in and see how it works out."
But, right now I ask specifically about the pocket cards that might cause you to go all-in pre-flop... I personally can't think of a thing except perhaps AA or maybe KK, but I still think I would make a very big bet on those, but not risk my last penny...
Look forward to hearing some input on this!

Katt, I think we have all gone all-in on AA...KK and I find that I always realize...once again.. I also know that's what makes poker so interesting and frustrating!! It's part luck and skill and why we keep going back for more!!

Rosebud you are so very right about the "once again"... I have gone all-in on less than that in the heat of the moment... Just knowing I have it and they are bluffing... Then comes the sound of one hand clapping! That would be my one hand clapping against my forehead as I moan, "Aaagghhh, I did it againnnnnnnn!" katt

All in pre-flop would possibly be Jacks and maybe Queens. There isn't much else that I would consider going all in with preflop. However, my bankroll would affect my decisions too so if I was short stacked, I would certainly be going all in on pocket 10s, 9s, 8s and 7s.

Really, all-in all the way down to pocket 7's? I am so shy of going all-in that I have trouble doing it with AA or KK... always end up broke... hmmm something else I must work on. Does help me know what my opponents may be up to... at least the ones who aren't going all-in with 3 9 off... katt

...only when shortstacked though Katt. Always best to go all in with a pair rather than Ace rag or Ace King when shortstacked.

So, if my opponent has a shortstack, they are more likely going all-in with a pair, but it might be as low as 77, but less likely AK or A rag... on the other hand the big stack may be taking more of a chance with an AK or A rag? Am I on the right track in figuring out what its got in its pocketssssss? katt

Absolutely Katt.
Shortstacks will usually wait for a pair to take their chances on.
