Time for an article...on RNG's

Friday the 27th of November 2009

I thought it was about time I wrote an article about poker on here and the subject I have chosen is RNG or Random Number Generators.

There have been many discussions on the forum about RNG's and what it means to each individual poker player. The common theme and consensus of opinion seems to be "poker RNG's stink".

An RNG is supposed to be a generator of a "random" number (or card in the case of poker) for you and your opponents’ next card or the cards that may fall in the middle of the table i.e. the flop, the turn or the river. There are hundreds of thousands of combinations that are supposed to be possible taking into account all the cards that have been dealt and the cards that remain in the pack.

That being the case, why are so many people complaining about the RNG's at online poker sites and in many cases, stopping playing online poker completely.

There has been speculation on the forum about why an RNG works in the way that it does and one explanation was that new players who are inexperienced, will likely call with very poor hands. To ensure the site keeps as many new players as possible, the site "allows" them to win with their rubbish hands - player thinks "hey I'm good" and deposits to get into higher stake games.

Personally, I thought this was a reasonable explanation. Why do we see so many new players going all in with 74 off and cracking aces by hitting a straight on the river? How can someone call a 10x BB raise with J4 and they win by hitting a full house? Poor play with bad RNG's.

I am passionate about poker and have played for many years online and in real life and what you see on poker sites online do not happen so often in real life. In fact it’s rare.

Added to the problem of the poor RNG's is the fact that software whiz kids create RNG prediction software that can predict 3 of the 5 cards that will flop on the table at a cost of a few bucks.

There really is not much hope for good poker players online unless....... I can hunt down a site that truly does have an RNG that no other software can predict, that truly is random and truly does not favour the poor/fishy player.
