Why you cheeky monkey!

Friday the 9th of July 2010

I'll no longer apologize for my late blog's, instead I will update my blog at the start of each month. Once a week was too much, I just don't have enough elucidating poker knowledge to warrant it!

Inspired by the heroic yet foolhardy documentary "The Cove" starring Isabel Lucas, I spent much of the month protecting dolphins in Japan. And was, as thus, unable to play much poker. I have also stopped eating tuna, as the majority of tinned tuna is complicit in the accidental, yet avoidable deaths of thousands of dolphins every year. I am still fine with the killing of innocent mogwai (the cute creature from the gremlins).

But I digress, this is a poker blog after all. For many of you, you may have played thousands of hours of online poker, but not that many on real live tables. As such, there are many naughty tricks you can pull in live poker that you are unable to do online. Today I will be outlining some...

1. Lets say you in a hand with a flop of Q-8-7. In you hand you hold 8-8 for a set of 8's. If the other person bets fake a fold, but flash one of your 8's at him making it look like an accident. Then say, "Did you really hit the queen?". Make sure the other player has seen the flashed 8.

Then get exasperated and either raise or call. A raise is better. The other player may try to bluff you if he doesn't hold the Q, or if he has hit the Q will most likely raise. I've seen this work in person, so it can work. It is also applicable in other situations where you have a big hand.

2. If you have a big pair AA-KK-QQ. Say the blinds are 200-100. Grab two, one thousand chips and nonchalantly toss them in, but announce "CALL" after they are in. In almost all casinos the bet must stand regardless of the verbal announcement. So to the other players it looks like you have accidentally put in a massive raise with a mediocre hand. Players with hands like A-Q, 9-9 or just others who think they can steal a big pot with no risk may get involved.

3. Not so much a trick, but after hands are over, especially if you're not in the pot, simply ask the player what cards they had. Be polite and casual, many players will answer you honestly, and you can store that information away for later hands.

If I've held your attention for this long, with my overly verbose and rambling writing, I thank you, and pleasantly invite you to continue reading my blog. I'm considering getting drunk and making a nuisance of myself at my local casino very shortly, to get some stories to tell in my blog, as I seem to be running out...

Caio for now,
