Dwan Ends Challenge On A High Note

Nov 23, 2009
Poker ace makes it a series victory The Full Tilt Dwan Million Dollar Challenge concluded Friday at Les Ambassadeurs in London with a $750 000 win for Tom Dwan against UK businessman Sammy George, giving the young poker ace a 2 to 1 series victory. He had previously lost $22 500 to Italian Marcello Marigliano and pipped Ilari Sahamies at the post with a $68 000 win (see previous InfoPowa reports). Dwan's clash with Sammy George revolved around a $250 000 buy-in NLHE competition over 500 hands or 12 hours, whichever came soonest. Following the trend of the earlier two matches, the pace was fast from the outset, where Dwan's skill and bold bluffs, augmented by an extraordinarily good run of cards, had George re-buying early during the game in order to stay afloat, and halting the game just before the 500 hand limit had been reached. Conceding that he had enjoyed an element of good fortune, Dwan said after the match, "I don't think I played too well today, I just think I happened to get a bunch of hands, like I don't think Sammy played badly, he just happened to be on the wrong side of some tough spots." "It's easy to look like a genius when you have the best hand every time, and easy to not look like one when you get beat every hand." The three match, high stakes series was organised for Full Tilt by Matchroom Sports, who's Eddie Hearn commented that the event had been sufficiently successful to warrant a further competition along similar lines, perhaps on the American side of the Atlantic next year. "All-in-all, the event was a huge success and we are already in talks to take the challenge to the States early next year," Hearn said.
