Virginia Students Use Poker to Practice Math

Virginia high school applies unusual math and logic tutoring This week's reports from The Washington Post include a somewhat unusual approach to learning math and logic reasoning. Namely, high school students in George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia are taught these two skills through the significantly skill-based game of poker. This new tutoring style, applied by tutor William Snyder's, whose poker club has been an instant success and currently one of the most popular extracurricular activities at the school, was approved by the school principal Tyrone Byrd, who explained: "We know the kids could play outside of school, but when they're here, we have the opportunity to show them how to play responsibly and to show them how the game relates to their education." There are certain ground rules in the club, which serve to make sure that the purpose of the game is purely educational. It never entails the use of real money, and the foundation of the game and statistics are discussed at the beginning of every session.
