Former governor speaks in favor of the pastime A change of heart is a normal appearance these days, especially when it comes to the legalization of online poker. This has recently been proved by a senior Democratic Party politician and former Nevada governor, Richard Bryan, who at the Southwest Bankruptcy Conference in Las Vegas admitted that he used to oppose the pastime, but that he finally realized how beneficial it would be to Nevada if it is properly legalized and regulated. In his keynote speech at the conference, he said: "We are in very challenging times," claiming that Las Vegas, with its dependence on tourism, conferences and entertainment, had been among the hardest hit American centers impacted by the adverse economic conditions, and characterizing recovery so far as "tentative at best." He also added that "visitor counts, convention attendance and room rates are going up, but it's never going to be like it was in the late 1990s and earlier this decade." In regards to the online poker legalization in the state, Bryan pointed to its benefits if it is combined with quality regulation, sensible handling and federal approval. However, he added that while he supports the legalization of internet poker, he remains opposed to that of online casino gambling. In conclusion, he said: “The traditional "taboos" associated with gambling have been broken by the more widespread acceptance of the pastime and the proliferation of tribal and other land gambling operations that have sprung up across the United States.”
