Update: Online Poker Legalization Initiative Faces Another Congressional Hearing?
DoJ evidence needs to be heard, says North Carolina Congressman It seems like two hearings on online poker legalization in the US are not enough for Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack's House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, as reports came this week that she may be calling for a third hearing, where the Department of Justice evidence may be heard. It has been noted that the ranking politician on the sub-committee, North Carolina Democrat G.K. Butterfield, sent a note to Bono Mack, in which he proposes the third hearing where the evidence of federal authorities should be heard, having in mind their potential involvement in any regulatory process. According to Butterfield, the subcommittee “...cannot obtain informed answers about the effectiveness of gambling regulation or consumer protection if we fail to invite key federal government agencies to testify as witnesses.” In addition, Butterfield nominated several federal departments that he thought should be invited, at the same time expressing concern about the effects of the legalization on underage gambling, where he quoted a study from 2010, which claims that 6 percent of boys in the age range of 14 to 17 admitted they used an online gambling site in September of that year. In conclusion, Butterfield underlined: “If the subcommittee is to proceed with the federal legalization and regulation of Internet gambling, it must do it right. I respectfully request that our subcommittee seek formal comments from federal entities that would be involved with any legalized gambling regime."
