Aubin Cazals takes home $480,564
Another event at the 43rd World Series of Poker wrapped up this week – event 6, which saw young Aubin Cazals (21) from Toulouse in France victorious in the $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em Mixed Max contest.
He bested the field of 409 hopefuls, beating them to the main prize of $480,584. In a comment on his win, he said he enjoyed the unusual format of this year's Mixed Max event, in which play began with full-ring tables, switched to six-handed play on the second day and ended in heads-up clashes when the number of players dropped to 32.
In the quarter finals, the list was impressive, with the player list comprising: Marvin Rettenmaier, Fabrizio Baldassari, Randy Haddox and Adam Geyer, while the semifinals saw the likes of Warwick Mirzikinian and Hugo Lemaire.
It was a hard way that Cazals had to cross to his final opponent, meeting Eric Froelich, Toby Lewis, Adam Geyer and Warwick Mirzikinian along the way, with the match against Mirzikinian lasting massive nine-and-a-half hours.
Finally, the final heads-up saw Cazal face Joseph Cheong in a real battle of five hours with several changes of chip lead. In the end, Cazals escorted the defeated Cheong to the cashier to collect his comforting $296,956 runner up prize.
