Schaefer entered the WSOP on a whim, and took down a major prize on a whim
After coming to Las Vegas for the Electric Daisy Carnival last week, former poker pro and current aspirant Army helicopter pilot Brandon Schaefer (31) decided to give up the $1,500 needed for buy-in to compete in event 14 of the World Series of Poker. And guess what – he took down the NLHE Shootout competition on a whim, just as he entered!
It was a stellar competition which attracted 1,138 players, some big names among them. And Schaefer managed to outplay them all and beat them to the main prize of $311,174 and his first World Series of Poker bracelet.
At the final table he faced Jonathan Cohen, Adam Kagin, Layne Flack, David Chase, Michael Corson, Jeff Madsen, Brandon Steven and Justin Schwartz, while in the heads-up he had to defeat talented 24-year-old Cohen, who proved to be a worthy opponent, but with less luck.
In the end, Cohen had to settle for the runner up prize of $192,559.
