Event 18 finally brings the long desired record win to poker ace
If it wasn’t meant to be last year, this year’s World Series of Poker was much kinder to poker ace Phil Hellmuth, who made it to the World Series of Poker record books as he finally managed to win his twelfth victor's bracelet, which turned him into the top winner in the championship's history.
In order to break the record, he had to face off other 307 players in the $2,500 buy-in Seven Card Razz event, and beat them to the main prize of $182,793.
At the final table he faced five other bracelet holders among Don Zewin, Brandon Cantu, Scott Fischman, Brendan Taylor, Barry Greenstein, Michael Chow and Jeff Mistiff.
The action that decided the winner happened between Hellmuth and Don Zewin in the heads-up, which saw Hellmuth manage to overcome his obvious nervousness and defeat his difficult opponent, who earned himself a decent payout of $113,024.
Realizing that he had won, Hellmuth leapt out of his seat, then slumped to the floor when he realized that he had ended his five year bracelet drought to enter the history books. He then commented: "People are results oriented, and they should be. If you want to be great in our game, you have to win.”
