You gotta hand it to Benny Binion. Only he would have come up with the idea of adding James Butler 'Wild Bill' Hickok to the Poker Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame is a permanent fixture in the poker room at Binion's Horseshoe. After the Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas was sold, the World Series of Poker officially took over the Poker Hall of Fame and maintains control of it today.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1979 shortly after the first World Series of Poker took place at the casino on Fremont Street. After conferring with friends like Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim and Doyle Brunson, Binion began collecting photos and information on some of the greatest poker players of all time. That is how the Poker Hall of Fame got started.

Benny was a product of the old West. Today the Poker Hall of Fame contains the names and photos of three men who died while playing poker -- Wild Bill Hickok, Tom Abdo, and Jack 'Treetop' Straus.

An interesting side note about Abdo; he was stricken with a massive heart attack while playing poker but before the ambulance arrived, he asked another player to count his chips and save his seat.

If you visit Las Vegas, the Poker Hall of Fame is worth a visit. A limit and maybe even a no-limit Texas Hold'em game might be underway when you arrive at the Horseshoe. Here, for the record, are the names of the 53 people in the Hall of Fame, 22 of whom are living:
