Online Poker Popularity Grows in Spain
Spain is attracting the attention of online poker operators since new regulations were introduced in May 2012. Popularity is growing since operators have been granted licenses to provide online poker to Spanish players rather than doing so illegally. The Spanish Gambling Act became effective as of June 5th and assesses a 25% tax on all gross gaming profits. This has already delivered a serious return to the tune of over €77 million. Real money gambling has increased significantly since the new laws. According to reports, 1.5% of the Spanish population is now gambling online. This is a huge number and is definitely putting money into the government's pocket. Each month since June has seen an increase in players. Sports betting still holds the top spot but poker is a very close second. Not only is this increase in players good for the economy in Spain but it's also a bonus for operators. For example, PokerStars has seen significant growth over the last several months. As the online poker market continues to increase in popularity, it shows that good can come from solid regulation and Spain is a perfect example. Now if only we could get the US as a whole to follow suit more quickly.
