Update: Massachusetts House Reps in Favor of Online Poker Legalization Amendment
Following the recent state House voting 122 - 29 on the preliminary budget bill containing the online poker legalisation amendment (number 365) based on the proposal submitted by 18 Massachusetts Representatives, it seems that the online poker legalization process is just around the corner for this US state. The proposal defines the 21-year age threshold for players, and includes provision for ID verification, the security of data and player information. Additionally, geolocation is requested to ensure that the activity is confined within the state. As for security, anti-money laundering and problem gambling requirements are provided for, while transfers between player accounts will not be allowed. Moreover, as per the amendment, a maximum of three online poker sites could be licensed and regulated. Each licensee would be obliged to pay $10 million in licensing fees for a ten year licence. Rigorous punitive measures apply in case the licences do not produce operational activity within 30 days. Judging by the provisions of the online poker legalization amendment, the Massachusetts license applicants would have to be established and experienced operators.
