Latest from WSOP: German Win in Event 56 and Scandalous Participant in Event 1
The latest news from this year's WSOP involve reports of some great wins, but also some shocking revelations from Event 1. The good news is the win of another amateur player, German Nikolaus Tiechart who took down the $2,500 buy-in event 56 for a win of $730,736 after besting 1,736 entrants. At the final table, he encountered Josh Arieh and Nicolas Levi, along with Vincent Maglio, Dan Owen, Sergey Lebedev, Kirill Rabtsov, Nicolas Faure and Sebastien Comel, and he had to defeat Maglio in an intense heads-up to claim his first WSOP bracelet. For his trouble, Maglio received a hefty paycheck to $452,008. “The bracelet, for me, is a dream," said the German, a retired investor from Dusseldorf. “This is the greatest day of my life.” On a more gloomy note, it has been reported that one of the players in event 1 - the $500 buy-in Casino Employees competition, Troy Wilcoxon from Washington State, could be one of the people involved in a $25,000 heist at the Lancer Lanes Casino in Clarkston, Washington, where he was reportedly employed. Wilcoxon, who finished 11th in the event, winning $5,010, has been arrested along with another defendant named James Nollette, and the duo are now facing charges of burglary, theft and money laundering before the Asotin County Superior Court in Washington. The two are accused of stealing over $25,000 in the Lancer Lanes Casino heist on May 23, after which they drove to Las Vegas where they spent several days. And according to Detective Richard Muszynski from the Clarkston Police Department, there's "a good chance" that Wilcoxon used the money obtained in the heist to finance his event 1 participation and his Las Vegas stay. Furthermore, Wilcoxon also seems to have debts totalling about $15,000, according to investigators. In related news, poker legend Doyle Brunson seemed to be very upset about his failure to make it to the final table in the $50,000 buy-in Poker Players Championship. He reportedly Tweeted: “Haven't won a pot. I don't need a doctor, I need an undertaker”.
