Thieves Got $2 Million out of Card Fraud
Spain's police has arrested five individuals in cities Torrevieja and Benidorm. A Major anti-fraud operation, named Op Voluto, was conducted around October 2012, leading to arrests of suspects thought to be involved in a card data theft scheme. The fraud gang would arrive at petrol stations claiming to be maintenance crews for the card payment machines. Doing this they would gain easy access to sensitive pre-paid card data that would normally be shielded by tough security measures. The theft scheme affected over 2,000 petrol stations across the country. The gang used plundered data at online gambling sites, illegally earning over 2 million euro in cash. Their games of choice were online poker tournaments on internet gambling sites licensed in Spain and Gibraltar. Spanish police searched a number of private properties in Torrevieja and Benidorm, seizing laptops, mobile phones, cash and other evidence relating to illegal activity. Investigation continues.
