Austria to Confine Poker Games to Licensed Land Based Casinos
Restrictions are to be placed on Austrian poker players when the Finance Ministry implements tax reform, which will see poker available only to licensed land casinos, electronic lotteries such as win2day and WINWIN machine operators. Wirtshauspoker (pub poker) will still be available only if the games are only held every quarter with no more than 100 players paying a maximum buy-in of Euro 10 per person. Certain poker halls like Concord Card will not be subject to this rule. Pleased with the news, Casinos Austria said it would have liked to see the changes become effective sooner rather than in 2017. Austria continues to have issues with the European Commission and the European Court of Justice as it has failed to comply with European Union gambling laws. In 2014, ECJ discovered that Austria was inconsistently applying gambling laws and occupied with taxation instead of consumer protection.
