Week 8 of the GPL is complete we have a new format heading our way. After a week off, the Global Poker League will come back in full force with 33 straight days of heads up matches. All games will be filmed and streamed live on Twitch.tv from their own studios in Las Vegas The final matches in May saw Liv Boeree and Igor Kurganov take a 1st and 2nd to help push their team to the top spot in the Eurasia conference. Their lead is slim with Moscow hot on their heels just 5 points behind. Montreal leads the Americas conference with a more dominant lead of 9 points. LA Sunset will see a new member to their team, which we reported on earlier. Breaking Bad TV star Aaron Paul who played Jesse Pinkman will participate in 3 heads up matches. Global Poker Index Ari Engel is the leader heading into the WSOP with 2262 points in the GPI. Close behind is the 2016 Super High Roller Bowl runner -up Fedor Holz. Holz closed the gap between he and Engel and is now less than 60 points behind. A nice cash, or a win at the 2016 WSOP will see him surpass Engel and take the lead. Other players still in contention are Steve O'Dwyer with 2184 points. Chance Kornuth with 2124. And Samuel Panzica with 2059. WSOP 2016 Updates Alan Parcel wins the $10,000 Heads Up event winning $320,000 by defeating John Smith. Notable finishes include Olivier Busquet in 4th and Benjamin Geisman in 7th. Peter Eichardt of Sweden becomes the first non-American to win an event this year when he took down the $1,500 NL Hold Em event for $438,000 and beating out over 2,000 players. Ryan D'Angelo beat out a hall of fame final table when he won the $1,500 2-7 Draw Lowball tournament that saw 279 players enter. At the final were John Monnette, Tom Franklin, Dan Kelly and Barry Greenstein. Ian Johns wins the $1500 HORSE event by beating Accomplished pro – Justin Bonomo and taking home $212,000. Scotty Nguyen made his way back in to the poker spotlight when he finaled this tournament and finished in 8th place. Mike Cordell wins the $1500 6 handed NL Hold Em event becoming the 9th American to win an event this year. He had to outlast a large field of 1,477 players, but would go in to win a bracelet and $346,000. Long time pro Jean Gaspard wins his first bracelet after he won the $10K Dealers Choice tournament. John Monnette made his 2nd final table of the 2016 WSOP in this same event finishing 3rd. Heading into the final of the $1500 Razz event, Daniel Negreanu is 4th in chips with only 12 players left.
