Jason Mercier Having a Great 2016 WSOP
Jason Mercier has always been known as one of the top tournament players in the world. Prior to entering the 2016 WSOP, he already held 3 WSOP bracelets and over $3 million in winnings at the WSOP alone. The American pro, sponsored by Poker Stars, was expecting to have a break out performance in 2016. He was so confident that he made several side bets with his peers. Those bets included winning one bracelet, and winning multiple bracelets. Winning one is tough enough, but winning two is rarely done. It does occur, but the odds of doing it are astronomical. He would win his first side bet, and first bracelet of 2016 in Event #16, a $10K buy in 2-7 Draw Lowball tournament. Only 100 players entered, and Mercier would win his 4th WSOP bracelet by defeating Mike Watson heads up. It was a tough final table with 4 bracelet winners and some of the game's best. But Mercier would take his 3:2 chip lead and become just the 39th player in WSOP history to win 4 bracelets. His next run would come in event #20, a $10K 7 Card Razz event. Another tournament with just 100 players, Mercier would finish one spot behind his previous final table. Ray Dehkhaerghani would outlast Mercier who finished 2nd. It was another tough final table, and Jason could not pull through to win his 5th bracelet, and likely more side bets. On to Event $24, where we see a trend. Mercier is final tabling every 4th event. After winning his 1st bracelet of 2016, he said he stands to win more money in side bets if he wins multiple bracelets than he would win if he wins another tournament. With just 14 players left in the $10K HORSE event, Mercier held the chip lead and looked poised to win that 5th bracelet and side bets. What appeared to be his toughest final table thus far at a star studded table featuring, James Obst, Nick Schulman, Adam Friedman, Bryn Kenney and John Monette, the odds were always against Mercier. But, his skills and a little luck would shine through, taking him to his 5th bracelet of his career, and 2nd of 2016. His win was worth $422,874, with much more in side bets coming in we can assume. With more than half of the tournaments at the 2016 WSOP left to be played, Jason has plenty more chances to join an elite group of players winning 3 bracelets in one year. He already is part of an elite crowd that include the best of the best. His total WSOP winnings now top $4.5 million with more likely to come.
