New GPI Leader and WSOP Updates
Players can change their lives with a strong showing at the WSOP. One good run can lead to millions in winnings and a lifetime in the record books. It can also change the fate of those gunning for the top spot of the Global Poker Index. Which many consider to be the measuring point for best player of the year. For 22 weeks, Steve O'Dwyer had a lock on the top spot. Fedor Holz quickly moved up on his heels with his second place in the Aria Super High Roller Bowl. Then doing the same in his next event. With the WSOP coming up most players knew it was anyone's to grab. Holz finally over took the leader and became the GPI leader for the first time in his career. A handful of cashes at the WSOP helped move him to the top spot. Anthony Zinno would also take advantage of the WSOP b cashing in a few events and moving in to the second spot. O'Dwyer who was once the leader is now sitting in 3rd. Jason Mercier was the boards big mover as he climbed 2 spots up to number by winning 2 bracelets and another cash. The gap between 1st and 5th was so large that he needed a few big finishes to close that gap. The rest of the top 10 remained much the same with only Stephen Chadwick being the newest member of the top 10. His final table at the WSOP helped push him past David Peters. With cashes, final tables and wins at the WSOP, many new players are cracking the top 300. Jean Gaspard won the $10k Dealers Choice event and moved up to 171 after being in 355th place. Phil Hellmuth also continues to climb the leaderboards during always strong showings at the WSOP cashing in 2 events. He moves from 314, up to 189. Outside of the WSOP, casinos in the area run bigger tournaments that many of the players choose to play in. These all count towards the GPI and will surely shake things up even more. In WSOP news, Calvin Lee wins one of the biggest prizes thus far at the WSOP when he won the $3k 6 max event for $531,000. Paul Volpe wins his second bracelet by taking down the $1,500 Eight Game Mix event for $149,000. He also has a 4th place finish in the $10k Dealers Choice event for $33,000. Finally, Rep Porter wins his 3rd bracelet after winning a Razz event. This is his first bracelet in 5 years where he last won in a bracelet in the same event. His live winnings at the WSOP are now over $2.2 million.
