Gus Hansen’s rise to the ranks of professional Poker player might be considered as unorthodox by some but he is now a mainstay at professional Poker tournaments nonetheless. Gus was born in 1974 in Denmark and had original aspirations of becoming the next big professional Backgammon player. But as Gus soon realized there aren’t nearly as many people playing Backgammon as there are people playing Poker. And where there are more players there is more money. Gus doesn’t pigeon hole himself as simply another professional Poker player, but regards himself as a professional gambler. He has been known to take bets on many different athletic pursuits, and a multitude of other games.

No slouch as an athlete himself, Gus was a youth tennis champion and participated in a number of different athletic pursuits. He officially became a professional Poker in 1997 and since then his career, and his name, have been on the rise ever since. He was voted into the top fifty sexiest men by People Magazine in 2004 and has won over seven million dollars since he took up the game professionally. His piercing blue eyes have undoubtedly given pause to many opponents as they have looked across at him at the Poker table. He also holds the distinction of being the only player to win four World Poker Tour titles.

His game play has been described as loose and extremely aggressive. He has been known to bluff, or raise, with virtually anything which leads his opponents into not knowing when he is holding a decent hand. It is just this type of cutthroat game play that has won him honors amongst his peers and a lot of money. It’s also just this fast and furious gambling methodology that has cost him against opponents who are able to see past the aggressive style and play more calculated.

Gus’ reputation extends beyond the mere Poker table, however, and is a successful entrepreneur in his own right. He helped establish Pokerchamps.com, a premiere Poker gambling site with himself as the resident professional. He has positioned himself as an ambassador of the sport raising awareness of the game in not only his homeland of Denmark, but all across the globe. In fact, Gus has been able to essentially span two oceans with his incredible game play winning honors in both the World Series of Poker and the more recent European addition, the European Poker Masters.

Currently Gus appears to be very content with this profession and plays whenever he gets the chance. He can still be found in the Big Game rooms of the most prestigious Las Vegas casinos but currently calls Monaco home. Extremely well rounded Gus can be found on the tennis court and he also provides commentary for a number of different Poker shows.
