Johnny Chan

Johnny Chan is an extremely well known poker pro who has had a very successful poker career. He was born in Geangzhou, China in 1957 and migrated to the United States when he was just 16 years of age. Chan’s family supported themselves as restaurant owners and Chan played a big role in the family business. When Chan was just 16 years of age he used a fake ID and played at the poker tables in Las Vegas. Amazingly, Chan ended up turning his $500 into a whopping $20,000. However, he lost everything before the night was over.

At 21 years of age, Chan decided to drop out of college and pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. He relocated to Las Vegas and started out playing at those poker tables with stakes below $3. He did what he had to in order to survive at first. Sometimes this meant making frequent trips to the pawn shop where he would pawn his belongings in order to fund his poker habit. Chan hopes to one day own his own casino. He is an amazing poker player that has gained an impressive reputation by proving to be one of the top competitors.

Chan gathered a lot of attention when he won the WSOP $10,000 buy-in Main Event in 1987, he then went on to win the 1988 WSOP $10,000 buy-in Main Event. Chan received a proposition from jerry Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers owner. Buss told Chan that he would give him a Lakers Championship Ring if he was able to win the WSOP for a third time in a row. Chan ended up coming in second in that WSOP right behind the then unknown Phil Hellmuth Jr. Chan succeeded in having the best three year WSOP of any poker player in the history of the WSOP. Chan had earned himself a well deserved spot in history as a poker legend to admire.

Chan currently resides in Las Vegas, where he is known for playing in some of the highest stakes poker games in the world. Chan has six children and he also owns a restaurant of his own. When it comes to his poker career, Chan has earned himself a place at the top of the list when it comes to highly regarded and extremely talented poker pros. When many people get in a discussion, Johnny Chan is usually one of the names which get brought into the conversation.

Johnny Chan is known to sit at the poker table with what has been called a “lucky Orange”. However, the orange actually came into play when Chan quit smoking when he decided to begin living a healthier lifestyle. Chan has found that he can tolerate the smoke filled poker rooms better when smoking was still permitted at the big tournaments, by bringing along his own form of air freshener. The orange peel allows him to smell citrus and would cut out on the smell of the cigarette smoke.
