Minh Ly is a Vietnamese-American professional poker player, viewed by many to be among the best of the cash poker players.
Minh Ly Background
Minh Ly was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the U.S. in 1986. Upon his arrival in the United States he settled in Las Vegas and tried to make a living for himself. After years working in a restaurant and although it took several years to reap some money from his poker efforts, Minh Ly did become a professional poker player. He is nowadays considered to be one of the world's top cash players and has earned over $2 million at the poker tables.
Today, Minh Ly is married to Lu Binh and they live in Temple City, California.
Beginnings of a Poker Professional Player
Following his arrival in the U.S. Minh Ly began working in a Chinese restaurant. At the same time he then started playing poker in an attempt to earn some more money. This seems to be the case for many people in Las Vegas, who played poker as an additional way of raising some extra funds, to try to make ends meet. It took a few years until things started coming together for Minh Ly at the poker tables and he then began to play at games with higher stakes.
While playing at the Bellagio, he received some support and advice from Doyle Brunson who recommended that he try spending a bit more time playing at poker tournaments. Once Minh Ly took this advice and began to play at poker tournaments, more success and cash has seemed to come his way.
Today, many consider Minh Ly to be one of the world's top cash gamers at the poker tables.
Minh Ly Career Highlights
Doyle Brunson became a sort of mentor in Minh Ly's life and it was perhaps therefore appropriate that the best poker win so far in his career was when he finished in first place at the WPT Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship. This was in 2005 when he won a massive prize of over $1,000,000 at the event.
Although Minh Ly has yet to win a WSOP bracelet, he has cashed in on prizes at different WSOP events on several occasions.
In 2001, Minh Ly came in third place at the WSOP $3,000 Limit Texas Hold'em event. In the same year, he also made cash winnings at the $2,000 pot limit hold'em event.
In 2002, he reached the final table of the WSOP main event, completing in ninth place.
In 2005, Minh Ly just missed out on a WSOP gold bracelet as he finished in second place, when he was beaten by none other than Doyle Brunson.
In 2008, at the WSOP 7 card stud world championship, he earned over $118,000 by completing in fourth position.
Today, the connection with Doyle Brunson is still in tact and Minh Ly is one of the professional poker players that play at DoylesRoom, online poker site.
