I was freshening myself up for my nightly trip to the poker room at Talking Stick Casino in Scottsdale, AZ. when I decided to check Fox News to see what was happening in the world.

Being a journalist and writer first and second and a poker player third, I am a news junkie at heart. I love to know what is happening in society. Nothing much interested me until I came across a story about actor Johnny Depp.

The popular star of 'The Rum Diary,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' Johnny Scissorshand' and my favorite, 'Don Juan DeMarco' had granted an interview to Rolling Stone Magazine to talk about his life.

According to the news account, Depp had really opened up. He talked about his depression, drugs, and extravagant lifestyle. He admitted spending over $30,000 a month on wine alone and said he spent $5 million to blast the ashes of his late friend Hunter S. Thompson from a cannon into a field in Colorado.

Excuse me. Five million to make a cannon shot just to scatter the ashes of a friend. That doesn't sound like life. To me that sounds like the delusional decision of a person addicted to cocaine.

As a reporter, I have interviewed many stars of the Silver Screen and television. Some of them like Strother Martin and Claude Akins were down to earth people who lived relatively normal lives while making films to entertain their audiences.

Others like Richard Burton, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Oliver Reed allowed their lives to be dominated by alcohol or chemicals that would put them in an altered state. That is what I think happened to Johnny Depp.

I watched Depp along with Marlon Brando and Faye Dunnaway in a wonderful comedy called 'Don Juan DeMarco.' Depp portrayed a young man in New York who thought he was Don Juan, the great lover. Brando played his psychiatrist and Dunnaway acted as Brando's wife.

Depp's career was just starting to rise when he made the movie. That was when his lifestyle and use of drugs started to take off.

Hollywood, CA. is the cocaine capitol of the world. The town is filled with the expensive white powder that creates a delusional lifestyle for people addicted to it. I have never used cocaine but I had a friend, a sports writer on a newspaper I worked for, who was hooked on it.

We would have parties at Joey's home. While the rest of us drank beer or perhaps smoked marijuana, Joey would snort cocaine. He had a lovely girl friend whose family was wealthy and she would sadly watch him as he raved about the power of cocaine, claiming it was the most incredible substance ever available to mankind.

The cocaine cost him his relationship with the girl.

It cost him his job.

It cost him his career.

As I closed down my computer before leaving the house to drive to the casino, I thought how sad it was that Depp had allowed himself to become so addicted to cocaine that he had thrown away an estimated $650 million of his earnings on an extravagant lifestyle that could only lead to financial destruction, delusion or even death.

I have this piece of advice for Depp.

Johnny, get rid of your cocaine contacts and stop using it.

Switched to marijuana, the blessed herb.

Make good movies, not cocaine-fueled fantasies like 'Pirates of the Caribbean.'

Start living again. You'll be fine.
