Alex Dreyfus may just be the biggest name in poker you have never heard of. An entrepreneur, businessman, controversial, but surprisingly not a poker player. For a man who is trying to own the poker world, he doesn't play that much poker.
Dreyfus has his hands in many aspects of poker. He owns and runs one of the largest poker websites at Global Poker Index. His Dana White personality matches his looks. Very outspoken, giving Calvin Ayre a run for his money when it comes to the megaphone for poker.
For those in the business, he was the founder of Winamax poker that he sold along with iGaming software company ChiliMax. He used some of those profits to purchase the Global Poker Index, along with Hendon Mob poker database back in 2012.
He sees poker as the next big thing, and is putting most of his eggs in that basket.
Over the past year, Dreyfus has been trying with almost desperation attempts to make poker a sport and mainstream. In 2015 he tried to create the American Poker Awards. The idea is to create an Oscar like ceremony with sponsors, televised deals and more. It's only been a year, and he admittedly knew it would not make money, so well have to wait until next year if it was a success.
He is also the founder of the Global Poker League which has just started. Another attempt at making poker a real sport with a major league feel like other top sports.
His last venture, or publicity stunt I should say is what I want to talk about today.
One of the biggest names in poker is without question - Phil Hellmuth. The man who will say anything to make a buck, is about to do anything to make a buck. He essentially sold his life to Dreyfus and will now be the official poster boy for the GPI.
The deal is for Hellmuth to stream his entire life on Twitch - a popular streaming site for gamers and poker players. From the time he wakes up, to he sleeps, and even when he's sleeping, his life will be on the internet for all to see.
You can even have live commentating throughout with 5 already chosen reporters in five languages.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend checking out the stream if it's still available.
Regardless of the success of the moves Dreyfus makes, you have to give the man credit for trying. Thinking outside of the box is definitely in his vocabulary. I'm excited to see what he comes up with next.
