Gambling evidence and $34 000 seized Media reports from South Carolina indicate that the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office vice and narcotics unit were busy on the gambling front this week, raiding a local home and arresting 21 poker players and dealers. More than $34 400 and gambling equipment was seized in the initiative, which followed an ongoing investigation into allegations of operating an illegal gambling house. Phillip Brian Persails (34) was charged with operating a gambling house and simple possession of marijuana. One individual, Jerry Richard Belcher (41) was additionally charged with assault following an incident during the raid. Police spokesmen said that investigators entered a residence last Sunday afternoon and found about 20 people - along with a variety of poker chips, playing cards and five poker tables. "There were no video poker machines. It was just playing cards, and poker chips, and the money that was exchanging hands, which is against state law," Master Deputy Tony Ivey said.
