Ireland Hosts Norwegian Poker Championships
The tournament had to go offshore as it's illegal in home country Dublin was full of Norwegians this weekend, and will continue to be so as the week-long Norwegian Poker Championship is held in the city. 1000 Norwegian players gathered in Ireland for the tournament, which cannot be held at home, as Norwegian law makes it illegal to host or play poker tournaments in Norway. It has been specified by Frode Fagerli of the Norwegian Championship organizers team: “Under gaming laws in Norway if you pay to participate and there are prizes and a degree of luck or chance involved, it is a lottery. You're only really allowed to bet on the national games like the lottery, and then horse races, soccer games and things like that.” Still, Ireland may not be the venue to hold the Championship at for much longer, as its Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter recently stated that a comprehensive revision of State gambling laws is necessary.
