Californian Tribes Against Online Poker Bill
Tribal casino owners opposed to Wright's bill The Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations in a critique sent to state Senate president pro tempore Darrell Steinberg severely criticized California Sen. Rod Wright's online gambling legalization proposal SB1463. Representing nine federally acknowledged Southern Californian tribes, the Alliance is "strongly opposed" to the measure in its present form, and is particularly angry about the passage that calls for a blanket waiver of tribal sovereign immunity, which the tribes want to be completely excluded. The number of licenses proposed, which the tribes wish to confine to online poker only and to be issued to existing licensed operators, seems to be beyond negotiations as well. What's more, Sen. Wright has put the bill under urgency procedural requirements, and if it garners two-thirds of the votes in the state Legislature, it can come into effect almost immediately.
