Tabcorp Ready to Pounce on Australian Poker Industry
Australian gaming companies such as Tabcorp are hoping that the government will allow online poker. Should poker become legalized, Tabcorp will jump at the opportunity to try their hand at online poker and make the most of this growing form of online gambling. During an interview this week, Tabcorp's Chief Executive David Attenborough said, “Piloting tournament poker would be an area that should be profitable for us.” Mr. Attenborough claims that the company surveyed the public finding that up to 50% of people had tried online poker. Online casinos are not allowed to offer online poker at the moment; however Australians may play poker with operators outside of Australia. Mr. Attenborough said it was “sensible” that online sports betting was legalized as punters could already do it via the phone, in its retail establishments or via offshore websites. “It's just not good for the customer to be betting online, the game kicks off, then a little sign comes up and says if you want to now have the next odds that are offered you must pick up the phone,” he said. At this time it remains unclear whether the law will change as the conservative opposition says they do support “watering down” of current legislation. “It's the next generation of the way people will bet so we are making sure we're at the forefront of bringing that to market”, said Attenborough.
