The Norwegian Minister for Culture, Thorhild Widvey is in support of live poker tournaments and hopes to host the Norwegian Poker Championship in 2015.
Norway has a reputation for restrictions and fines in terms of organizing live poker tournament events so opening up the market will be a welcomed change; however it is possible that anti-gambling organizations will fight against it.
Widvey proposes that to grant paid permits for tournaments in licensed land-based gambling locations and has asked Norway gambling regulator, Lotteritilsynet to prepare legislation by March 1, 2014 to launch a liberalization plan.
There is a need to bring in additional revenues and a reconsideration of online gambling could be in store for Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland, Bosnia, Hungary, Romania, Lithuania and Sweden.
