Costa Rican Minister Outraged with a Ben Affleck Movie
A Ben Affleck movie called Runner Runner has deeply offended the Costa Rican government minister, who only recently became aware of its storyline. A Hollywood adventure based on the internet gambling industry, the storyline of the movie fallows a student poker player who travels to Costa Rica to confront an online gambling tycoon who he believes has swindled him. Celso Gamboa, the minister for Public Security, was outraged; he claims that the film portrays Costa Rica as a corrupt and violent place filled with crime. He was especially offended by the part showing the corruption in the police force. The highlighted scene in the movie shows Costa Rican police officers – dressed in official uniforms that bear the Fuerza Publica insignia –seen in the company of prostitutes while drinking and smoking cigars. Minister Gamboa complained that unauthorized use of police insignia is unlawful. “Instead of drawing attention to our country for its flora and fauna, they tarnish the image of our civilian police,” said Mr. Gamboa. “It is a way of telling criminals and drug addicts that Costa Rica is perfect [for such behavior]. We want this to be fixed because you don't mock our country.”
