PokerStars Introduces “The Mountain Series” Guaranteed Tournaments
It's a busy time of the year over at PokerStars. Between opening up shop in America for the first time in almost 6 years – the upcoming SCOOP tournaments, and a possible buy out, there was little time to catch your breathe. PokerStars manages to somehow keep delivering though. They aren't the best in the business for no reason. Their latest attraction – The Mountain Series, was a new addition to PokerStars already overwhelming list of tournament series that are always met with huge fan fare. The Mountain Series proved to be no different in its first go around on the online poker giants site. Taking place between April 7th and April 10th, ten tournaments comprised this newest, and exciting tournament series. Named – “The Mountain Series” for its buy in structures that started off low, and climbed higher as each new tournament was resented. And making sure to stay in character, each tournament was named after a real mountain. The first tournament was an $11 buy in that kicked off the series. Australian player – mjw006 was the first ever winner in this new series of guaranteed tournaments taking down $17,000. What's more impressive was that he had to beat out a huge field of almost 17,000 entrants. That same day, the next tournament played. A $33 buy in, Super Knockout with $100K guaranteed. The winner took home over $15,500. Almost half of that prize money was in knockouts. $6,970 to be exact. A $55 NL Hold Em tournament would begin the following days start of the series with another $100K in guaranteed prize pool. The final table saw a 3-way deal made with each player collecting $19,404. Climbing up the mountain later that day was a $109 buy in – 6 max tournaments with the winner bringing in over $27,500. Over the course of the next 3 days, tournament buy ins started to get larger and larger as players got closer to the peak of the mountain. Prize pool guarantees also started to climb. The first $150K guaranteed was a $215 buy in – followed by a $320 buy in super knockout with a $350K guarantee. On Sunday, prize pools started to get massive, as did the buy ins. Doug Polk – A.K.A. “WCG Rider” won the $700 buy in with a $750K guarantee for $162,952. Sunday also saw the first 4 figure buy in. A $1,050 rebuy with a $500K guarantee. First place won $167,420. The final tournament of the Mountain Series, aptly named – the $2,100 Mount Everest tournament, would be a 2-day event that ended on Monday. A nice sized field of players of 973 ponied up the $2,100 buy in for the first place prize of $350,280 won by Costa Rican player, “majagua69.” Overall, The Mountain Series was a huge success with all but one exceeding the guaranteed prize amount. Big names showed up to play as well. It's a safe bet the Mountain Series will be a regular fixture over at PokerStars.
