We are officially one week in to the Global Poker Leagues endeavor to change the way we view poker. April 8th marked the first week of play for the season. There were a total of 10 matches played with a mix of 6 max, and heads up contests. Match 1 and 2 had the following teams and players. Paris Aviators – David Kitai London Royals – Igor Kurganov Moscow Wolverines – Dmitry Urbanovich Hong Kong Stars – Weiyi Zhang Rome Emperors – Walter Treccarichi Berlin Bears – Dan Cates The results of the match are in the order above. David Kitai won the first ever Global Poker League event earning 7 points for the Paris Aviators. The second match had the same teams facing each other, with a few sub ins. Raiden Kan would play for the Hong Kong Stars and win match 2. Chris Moorman sat in for the London Royals and placed 5th. Dan Cates would once again finish in last. Match three was a new set of teams. Jason Wheelers from the New York Rounders won the 7 points for his team. Anthony Zinno from the Vegas Moneymakers – Chris Moneymakers team, would place 2nd. Byron Kaverman placed 3rd from the San Paulo Metropolitans. Mike “Timex” McDonald came in 4th for the Montreal Nationals. Fedor Holz from the LA Sunset came in 5th. While Tony Gregg from the San Francisco Rush ended in last with zero points. Their second match would see the same players for each team with Mike McDonald winning. Anthony Zinno had a strong showing for the Vegas Moneymakers placing 2nd once again. Heads up play began on match 5 with Randy Lew from the Hong Kong Stars facing the Moscow Wolverines Sergey Lebedev. Lew would win all 3 matches and earn 9 points for the team. Each heads up match is a 3 match series with each win earning 3 points. Match 6 was Bertrand Grospellier beating Dan Cates two out of three times. Cates finally earned 3 points for his team. Not a great start for the former heads up specialist. Justin Bonomo would win two heads up matches against the Rome Emperors Timothy Adams. While The LA Sunsets Olivier Busquet would win 2 out of 3 matches against the Sao Paulo Metropolitans Darren Elias. Match 9 had Anthony Wigg from the San Francisco Rush winning 2 of 3 matches against Martin Jacobsen of the Montreal Nationals. Our final match had Tom Marchese from the NY Rounders winning 2 matches against Anthony Zinno. Overall, after the first week of play the Hong Kong Stars accumulated the most points, with 18. The NY Rounders and Paris Aviators both have 16. The Berlin Bears look to improve on their first week of poor performances and add to their league worse – 3 points.
