Player of the Year Standings

Player of the Year Standings
Last week, we took a look at the Global Poker Index and its changes among the leaderboard. The GPI is one of the most respected leaderboards, but there are others out there. Each has their own way of handing out points, but all are worth paying attention to. Even the WSOP has their own Player of the Year race which is fun to watch. And possibly hands out more money and prizes for winning that award than any other points race. With the WSOP, were going to see a lot of changes among the top. We may even see some players thrust in to contention that come out of nowhere one or two big scores. Since money won does play a role in the points earned, winning half a million or more, can really boost your earnings. So let's take another look at the player of the year races from the 3 main outlets. Global Poker Index At one point Steve O'Dwyer had a choke hold on the top spot. After Fedor Holz had back to back 2nds in major events, including the Super High Roller Bowl. Then adding in a few cashes at the WSOP, he has overtaken the top spot, and is now the official leader of the GPI. Hot on his heels is Jason Mercier who is having the best WSOP of 2016 thus far. He sits 12 points behind and has a real shot at winning the GPI points race. Anthony Zinno, and O'Dwyer who were once 1st and 2nd, drop to 3rd and 4th respectively. There seems little chance they could win after falling almost 200 points behind Mercier. The GPI is now a two horse race. But anything is possible. Card Player POY Card Player seems to use a completely different method for calculating points. Fedor Holz is the one similarity between the GPI and Card Player, as both points races have Holz sitting in first place. After that, it's completely different. Jason Mercier is not even in the top 10 on Card Player and sits in 17th place. Anthony Gregg is in 8th, while Steve O'Dwyer is in 15th. Ari Engel is 2nd on the Card Player board, yet isn't even in the top 15 at GPI. WSOP Player of the Year The WSOP player of the year race is going to be different since it uses only WSOP events to calculate scores. So we won't fault them for having a disparity in results. We do see Jason Mercier atop the leader board with 1,695 points after his 4 final tables, and 2 bracelets so far. Benny Glaser sits in 2nd, but is over 500 points behind. Ian Johns, who also won 2 bracelets this year is in 5th place.
